All Things Green Man & The Traditional Jack-in-the-Green

Bronze Green Man

Andy Elwell from Weymouth recently got in touch with The Company to give us some information about the fantastic Green Man he owns:

It was found in a farmers field  about 16 years ago, just on the outskirts of Weymouth, Dorset.  It is about the size of a 10p piece and has been dated by the British Museum to the 12th or 13th Centuries. It is made from bronze but at one time was probably partially silver plated. The British Museum thought that the unusual fixing could place it as a horse bridle decoration.

A picture is included here, but for more please visit our Flickr Site at

We welcome Andy as the 70th Member of The Company of The Green Man!

    That’s rather special!

I see there are drawings in the photo set – has the item been published anywhere?

  2. It is amazing isn’t it? I’m very jealous! I don’t think it has been published anywhere. Andy is in the Merchant Navy and I believe is currently on the seven seas. Hopefully he might get a chance to pop into the blog sometime and let us know.

Hello from Andy Elwell, the owner of the Weymouth bronze Greenman. The drawing in the set of photo,s was done by myself to help show the detail of the piece incase the photo,s didn,t do it justice., and they don,t. ! It,s a stunningly intricate piece of carving and is only appreciated when held in your hand. It also looks smaller when held than the impression given by the photo,s. I do have better pictures than this also.

Hello Kath, if you give me an e-mail address I,ll try and send them on to you when I get a chance. I,ve got about 5 more pictures taken with a 20p coin to give it some scale, they are slightly smaller than the set on Flkr, but show the back of the thing also.
    My e-mail is …
