I have confirmation that two Jacks-in-the-Green greeted the May dawn this morning, both the Bluebell Hill (Rochester) and Winchcombe Jacks ignored the weather and were awoken by music, bells and dancing just after 5:30am. I’m still awaiting confirmation that the Lands End Jack was also greeting the dawn to the west but I’m very hopeful as I have heard that they were practicing hard. I’m also waiting for anyone to confirm that the Oxford and Deptford (Greenwich) Jacks went out a bit later in the day but again am confident that they did. I’m not expecting to hear that the City of London, Tunbridge Wells or the High Wycombe Jacks went out this year but would love to hear to the contrary.
This Saturday 3rd may sees the wonderful Bristol, Guildford, Knutsford and Highworth Jacks go out, do go and see them if you can. More details and links on our website HERE
The Winchcombe Jack will also be at Upton on Severn on Sunday May 4th, and meeting with the Sweeps Jack from Cheltenham at Sudeley Castle Winchcombe on Monday May 5th.
On Bank Holiday Monday 5th May the fantastic Hastings Traditional Jack-in-the-Green will weave his magic (tip – get there for his awakening from the fisherman’s museums before the grockles arrive) as well as the Whitstable and Ilfracombe Jacks.
I’ll be out to see an old favourite Jack and make the acquaintance of a much revered one this weekend so might see some of you out there. Thanks to everyone who has sent me pictures of the Bluebell Hill Jack, I will get them all on our Flickr archive soon. I would really love to get any pictures of any of the other Jacks, please e-mail them to me at firstname.lastname@example.org
My thanks to Ian McLauchlan for the wonderful picture above this post of the Bluebell Hill (Rochester Jack) surrounded by twelve bonfires.
More updates to follow soon……..
The Fowlers Troop Jack-in-the-Green will go out today around Greenwich. Please find details of the route below. If you see this years Jack please do take a picture and send it to me at email@example.com
The Oxford Jack should have been seen near Magdalen Tower just before 6am this morning. I would be extremely grateful if anyone who witnessed this fantastic event could let me know and if someone has any pictures of Jack please do contact me.
If anyone can confirm whether the The Lands End Jack-in-the-Green greeted the Dawn today I would be very grateful. And if anyone has a picture of Jack that I could add to the archives please do get in touch.
The Winchcombe (Gloucestershire) Jack in the Green went out at 5:40am this morning to greet the Dawn.
The picture above is from 2013, I would be very grateful if anyone with pictures from this year could let me know.
Jack will also be at Upton on Severn on Sunday May 4th, and meeting with the Sweeps Jack from Cheltenham at Sudeley Castle Winchcombe on Monday May 5th.
The Winchcombe Jack was revived in 2009 as part of “Marking the Year.” A Jack was recorded as visiting a local school by Emma Dent of Sudeley Castle in the 1890’s.
I am very pleased to report that the Bluebell Hill (Rochester Sweeps) is awake, as you can see from the picture above taken at 5:40 this morning. Jack-in-the-Green was awoken by Motley Morris at dawn on Bluebell Hill surrounded by twelve fires and he will be parading in the sweeps festival on bank holiday Monday. If anyone has any more pictures of this or any of the other Jack-in-the-Green events taking place today I would be very grateful for copies for our archive. Many thanks to Pete Hargreaves for this mornings pictures.
A Merry May Day one and all
It is 05:32 on May 1st 2014 and Jack-in-the-Green is awake.
